Eggenberg Samichlaus

Eggenberg Samichlaus

Austrian Barleywine • 14%

Eggenberg • AUSTRIA

Format: 330ml

Samichlauss beer, brewed by Eggenberg in Austria (founded in 1681), is originally a recipe by Hürlimann (founded in 1836) who developed yeasts and tested their limits with experimental beers. One such beer was born in 1979, as an experimental “festive beer” to see how far his lager yeast would ferment beer. Answer: 14%. Samichlauss (Saint Nicholas in Swiss German) was born! Recognized as the strongest beer in the world by the Guinness Book of Records in 1982, production ceased in 1996 after a takeover by the Feldschlösschen brewery. The Samichlaus recipe, the prized yeast strain, and the knowledge of Hürlimann’s brewers passed into the hands of Eggenberg in 1999 and the brewing has been faithful to that ever since. Brewed on December 6th on Saint Nicholas Day, lagered for a long time, it is only released the following year. Marked with a vintage, it can be kept for several years and develops aromas of dried fruits, chocolate and roasted malts. A meditation beer to be served as a digestive at the end of the evening.

About the brewery

The Schloss ("castle" in English) Eggenberg brewery has been brewing beer since the 17th century and has been owned by the Forstinger-Stöhr family for over 200 years. In 1999, the brewery bought the production rights to the famous Samichlaus. Developed according to the same recipe, with the same special lager yeast, in partnership with the former brewers of Hürlimann (Switzerland), it is still brewed on December 6, St. Nicholas' Day ("samichlaus" in Swiss German), and released the following year. The brewery has a much wider range of beers that we are looking forward to introducing you to.
